Whenever I go back to social media sites where my irl friends are, I always get so confused when I see how many of them are very public about their mental health struggles, their identities etc. And I don’t think there is something shameful in that and if it helps them and the people following them that’s great. What I am rather confused at is how easily people are ready to commodify their internal struggles into something shareable, creating a brand of themselves surrounding their most private thoughts with their full name and face attached to it. Of course strength and community can be found by sharing your struggles but I think the line is very thin on social media sites between finding all these positives things and turning your private struggle into something other people can consume in exchange for likes. And of course what I am doing here is partially not that different or else I would just write a diary but I always have the chance to go back to my real life identity and detach myself from this blog. I guess this is what confuses me the most about social media sites that are not tumblr - when you do these things with your full name and face attached to it, there is no way to separate yourself from the struggle you are sharing publicly and the person you create to be shareable
